Which course should I attend?
It is up to employers to make a first aid needs assessment in order to assess what level of first aid qualification staff should hold. This HSE document will give you guidance on the current regulations: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l74.pdf
Much will depend on your type of working environment, work place hazards and the number of employees you have. For low risk environments with smaller numbers of employees a 1-day Emergency First Aid at work may be sufficient. For higher risk environments and larger numbers of employees it may be necessary for some staff members to hold the 3-day First Aid at Work certificate.
For our outdoor courses you should check with the relevant National Governing Body to see what their exact requirements are for the level of qualification you must hold.
For those caring for children or infants then you’ll need a relevant Paediatric First Aid qualification.
If in doubt please don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll go through the various options with you.
Do I need any previous experience?
No previous experience is required for any of our courses with the exception of the First Aid at Work requalification course (FAWR). This requalification course is only available to those who currently hold a valid 3-day First Aid at Work certificate.
Are your courses fun?
We pride ourselves on delivering fun, engaging and memorable first aid training courses. By making our course practical and active and injecting some fun into what can be perceived as a fairly ‘dry’ subject, our clients leave feeling much more confident to deal with any first aid situations they may encounter. We do not teach our courses just by standing at the front of the room showing endless Powerpoint slides. Instead we employ a very successfully tried and tested method of repetitive and progressive practical training. This is the reason why so many clients come back to us when their qualification expire.
Where are you based?
We have our own Bristol Harbourside training venue located in the historic Underfall Yard. Our venue is conveniently located close to Bristol City Centre and is set right on the waterfront. We are located next to the Underfall Yard visitors centre and onsite café. A visit to this fascinating centre is well worth considering during one of the refreshment breaks.
Can you run a course at my venue or premises?
We are completely mobile and happy to deliver our courses at a venue of your choice or your own workplace. All we require is a room large enough to accommodate a group of up to 12 candidates with enough floor space to allow for casualty incident scenarios. We will discuss this with you if you’d like us to deliver training at your own venue.
How long will my certificate last for?
On successful completion of a course certificates will be valid for 3 years. Upon expiry it will be necessary to undertake another course. The 3-day First Aid at Work certificate can be re-validated by attending a 2-day requalification course rather the doing the whole 3 days again (providing it is undertaken no more than 1 month past the outgoing certificates expiry date).
How long are the courses?
The course duration is dependent on which course you undertake. Course can range from half a day covering basic first aid to 3 days for the First Aid at Work course. Please refer to each of the different courses on the website to give you an idea of the duration both in terms of days and hours required to be in attendance for.
What is the minimum age to attend your courses?
The minimum age limit depends on the course and qualification. Some courses have no minimum age limit for example our Urban First Aid for Young People or our tailored courses. Others (especially some of the externally regulated qualifications) have a minimum age limit of 16. We’re happy to discuss this with you should you have any candidates under the age of 16.
Do I need to be fit?
Although our courses are suitable for all levels of fitness they are practical and active so we would expect participants to be able to kneel down on the floor and to act as casualties for one other. We are able to make any reasonable adjustments for participants with mobility issues but you must be able to kneel down on the floor for assessment purposes in order to deal with a casualty.
Do you provide refreshments?
We provide unlimited tea or coffee for any courses we run at our own training venue. There is also an onsite café or shops close by. If we are running courses at your venue then we would leave it up to you to make any arrangements regarding refreshments.
What do I need to wear?
Comfortable, casual clothing suitable for kneeling and laying down on the floor. Trousers, sweatshirt, trainers etc. are ideal.
Do courses need to be run over consecutive days?
We are able to run courses over non-consecutive days if required. This is something best discussed at time of booking. Most courses do need to be completed within 6 – 8 weeks however
I’ve completed a course before but my certificate has expired (or I can’t find it)?
The only qualification that allows you to take a shorter requalification course is the 3-day First Aid at Work. You may revalidate this qualification with a 2-day First Aid at Work Requalification course. You may only attend this course if your current certificate has expired by no more than 30 days. You must also provide the trainer with a copy of your old certificate for verification purposes. If you do not have the certificate you will need to obtain it from either the Awarding Body or training company who certified you the last time. If you can’t provide evidence of your previous qualification then you’ll need to attend the full 3-day First Aid at Work course again. All other qualifications are revalidated by attending the appropriate course again.
